이동재는 쌀, 콩, 크리스탈, 레진으로 만든 알파벳 등을 캔버스에 붙여 형상을 만드는 작업으로 잘 알려진 작가이다. 콩과 팥으로 재현한 두 마리 쥐의 도상을 통해 전래동화 ‘콩쥐 팥쥐’를 떠올리게 하거나, 쌀알이나 크리스탈로 구현한 석굴암 본존불의 이미지를 통해 장엄(莊嚴)의 현대적인 해석을 보여주는 등 사물을 바라보는 시각을 제시해 왔다. 쌀이 지닌 역사와 문화의 의미와 시대성에 주목한 초기작업부터 자개단추, 크리스탈과 같은 일상의 사물을 재료로 적극 활용하는 것은 주변 사물에 관한 관심에서 비롯된 것으로 회화와 조각의 경계에 놓인 작품은 예술의 가치를 진정성 있게 보여준다. 동국대학교, 그리고 동 대학원 미술학과를 졸업한 이동재는 2018년 쌀알을 한 톨씩 붙여 만든 <아이콘_김구> 작품을 청와대 여민관에서 선보여 화제가 됐다. 프랑스 파리, 중국 베이징 등 국내외에서 12회의 개인전과 다수의 단체전에 참여했다. 국립현대미술관과 서울시립미술관, 환기미술관 등 국공립미술관과 울산지방검찰청, 동국대학교 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.

학부와 대학원에서 조각을 전공한 이동재는 합판을 이어 붙이고 깎아내서 어떤 형태를 만들거나 시멘트나 파라핀 왁스와 같은 다양한 재료에 대해 관심을 두고 물질을 다루는 작업을 했었다. 우연한 계기로 농산물을 주제로 한 전시에 참여하게 되면서 쌀이나 콩, 팥과 같은 곡물을 오브제로 재인식하는 계기가 되어 곡물 자체가 가지고 있는 어떤 일정한 크기와 색을 회화적으로 이용하기 시작했고, 이동재만의 ‘유기적 회화’가 탄생했다.

 ‘유기적 회화’라고 이름 붙여진 이동재의 회화는 예를 들어 콩으로 미스터 빈을 재현한다거나, 아인슈타인의 초상을 좁쌀로, 녹두를 이용해 녹두장군 전봉준의 초상을 제작하는 등 곡물이라고 하는 재료의 어떤 유기성, 곡물이 가지고 있는 물성을 상당히 직관적이면서도 유희적인 느낌으로 작업으로 풀어왔다. 쌀과 곡물의 시기를 지나 알파벳 유닛을 제작해서 대상과 관련된 노래 가사의 알파벳으로 초상을 만들어내는 등 직관적인 도상이면서 재료와의 관계 속에 담긴 메시지, 혹은 관객 스스로 해석할 수 있는 여지를 제공하고 있다.

 시대의 아이콘 초상화 시리즈는 한 세기를 대표하는 유명인들의 초상 시리즈를 제작한 것으로 빛나는 속성을 가진 어떤 ‘스타’를 표현하기 위한 오브제로 크리스탈을 사용했다. 시대를 풍미한 스타와 미인으로 대표되는 세기의 여배우들, 역사 속에 각인된 인물들은 작가 나름대로 재해석되어 빛나는 재료로 캔버스 위에 재현되었고, 그 빛 속에서 잊혀가는 인물을 탐구하고 있다. 엘리자베스 테일러, 오드리 헵번, 비비안 리 등 시대를 대표하는 스타의 모습은 크리스탈을 일정한 간격으로 배열한 점들이 모여 인물의 형상을 만들어내고 각 초상은 해당 인물과 연관된 노래의 가사가 함께한다. 오드리 헵번의 초상 <Icon_Audrey Hepburn>은 영화 <티파니에서 아침을>에서 불렀던 노래 <Moon River>와, 김연아의 초상은 갈라쇼에서 사용한 노래 <Imagine>과 함께 보여주며 가사를 이루는 각각의 알파벳은 크리스탈 스톤으로 치환되어 표현되었다. 텍스트가 크리스탈이라는 오브제로 전환되면서 의미는 사라지고 반짝이는 빛의 패턴만 남게 되고, 관람자는 재현 기호 매체, 물성 형상이 도상과 유희적으로 얽혀 만들어내는 다중적 맥락을 저마다의 다양한 경험 속에서 작품을 이해하게 된다. 도트로 이루어진 디지털 이미지로 비치는 이동재의 작업은 실제로 보게 되면, 물질 자체가 드러나게 되면서 가져오는 시각적인 효과를 통해 관람객들로 하여금 호기심을 충족시켜 주거나 새로운 자극을 준다.

Lee Dong Jae is well known for his works that create images by affixing objects such as rice, beans, crystals, and resin-made alphabets onto canvas. His works invite viewers to recall familiar narratives—such as the Korean folktale Kongjwi and Patjwi through two mice rendered with beans and red beans—or to reinterpret tradition in a contemporary way, as seen in his depiction of the Seokguram Buddha with grains of rice and crystals that convey a modern sense of majesty. From his early works, which focused on the historical and cultural significance of rice, to his active use of everyday materials such as mother-of-pearl buttons and crystals, Lee’s artistic practice stems from a deep interest in surrounding objects. Positioned between painting and sculpture, his works convey the authenticity of art’s value.

A graduate of Dongguk University and its Graduate School of Fine Arts, Lee gained wide attention in 2018 when he presented Icon_Kim Gu, painstakingly created by attaching grains of rice one by one, at the Blue House Yeomin-gwan. He has held twelve solo exhibitions in Korea and abroad—including in Paris and Beijing—and participated in numerous group exhibitions. His works are housed in major institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Seoul Museum of Art, the Whanki Museum, as well as public collections at the Ulsan District Prosecutors’ Office and Dongguk University.

Trained in sculpture at both undergraduate and graduate levels, Lee originally worked with materials such as plywood, cement, and paraffin wax, carving and assembling forms. A chance participation in an exhibition on agricultural products led him to reimagine grains such as rice, beans, and red beans as artistic objects. Their inherent size and color became the foundation of his painterly use of materials, marking the beginning of what Lee calls his “organic painting.”

Lee’s “organic paintings” often combine intuitive playfulness with materiality. For instance, he has recreated Mr. Bean using beans, Einstein’s portrait with millet, and General Jeon Bong-jun with mung beans. Through these works, he highlights the organic qualities and physical properties of grains, transforming them into witty yet contemplative artistic expressions. Beyond grains, Lee expanded his practice by producing alphabet units to construct portraits from song lyrics associated with his subjects, creating a direct connection between the chosen material and the image.

His Portraits of the Icons of an Era series focuses on famous figures who represent the spirit of their time. To capture the luminous qualities of “stars,” Lee employs crystals as his medium. Icons of popular culture and history—legendary actresses, renowned figures, and timeless stars—are reinterpreted and reimagined on canvas with glimmering materials, embodying both brilliance and remembrance. Each portrait is accompanied by lyrics of songs associated with the figure. For example, Icon_Audrey Hepburn references the song Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, while Icon_Kim Yuna incorporates Imagine, the song used in her gala performance. The alphabets of these lyrics are translated into crystalline stones, stripping away semantic meaning and leaving only shimmering patterns of light.

In these works, text becomes object, signs merge with materiality, and images emerge from playful yet complex relationships. The audience encounters multiple layers of meaning that can be interpreted in diverse ways based on personal experience. Seen from afar, Lee’s crystalline portraits resemble digital dot-based images; yet in person, the materiality of the objects is revealed, producing a visual effect that sparks curiosity and offers fresh sensory stimulation.
