표현 表現은 생각이나 감정을 밖으로 나타냄 또는 말이나 글, 행동을 뜻한다. 즉 표현은 감정, 생각, 아이디어 등 내면적인 것을 외부로 나타내는 모든 형태의 의사소통을 포함하며 언어적인 방법뿐 아니라 비언어적인 방법(미술, 음악, 몸짓 등)을 통해 이루어진다.

예술가의 표현 방법은 매우 다양하다. 오감에 반응하는 매체적 특성은 물론, 창작자의 개성, 문화적 배경, 사용하는 재료, 그리고 전달하고자 하는 메시지에 따라 달라진다. 작가는 이런 표현 방법의 하나 또는 여러 가지를 결합하여 자신만의 독특한 표현 기법을 창조한다. 특히 현실을 ‘재현’하는 ‘모방’의 미술이었던 전통 회화의 오랜 양식을 거부하고 다양한 미술 사조, 주의, 운동이 동시에 나타나기 시작한 현대미술 속에서 표현 방법은 상당히 중요한 요소라고 할 수 있다. 단순히 예술적 기술을 넘어 작가의 내면세계와 인생관을 반영하는 표현을 통해 관람자에게 작가의 독특한 시각을 이해할 기회를 제공하며 감상하는 이로 하여금 다양한 해석과 감정을 경험하게 한다. 작가의 개성이 드러나는 표현 방법은 예술 작품을 통해 인간의 다양한 감정과 사상을 탐구하고, 더욱 깊은 소통을 추구하는 데 있어 핵심적인 역할을 하고 있다.

《The Way to Expression》展에서는 회화의 표현법에 주목하여 추상회화와 맥이 닿아 있으면서도 개성 있는 표현 언어를 통해 독특한 작품세계를 보여주는 작가 하지훈, 하태임, 함명수의 작품을 소개한다.

하지훈은 강렬한 색의 물감을 몰아치는 붓질이나 손으로 문지르고 밀어내는 표현을 통해 작가 개인의 경험과 결합하여 재구성한 추상화된 풍경을 담고, 그 구조를 탐구한다. 하태임은 몸을 축으로 팔을 뻗어 궤적을 따라 획을 그어 반곡선의 색 띠를 중첩하여 리드미컬하고 감각적인 화면 구성을 보여준다. 함명수는 붓 터치라는 회화 기법에 대한 끊임없는 탐구를 계속하여 섬세한 붓 터치의 묘사를 통한 미세한 떨림과 움직임과 색채의 아름다운 조화를 통해 생동감 있는 작품을 보여준다.

파블로 피카소는 예술가는 자신의 주관적 경험과 관점을 통해 현실을 재해석하고, 그 과정에서 보다 깊은 진실을 탐구한다고 말했다. 하지훈, 하태임, 함명수 세 작가는 현실의 경험에서 얻은 이미지의 파편과 개인의 사유와 견해를 자신만의 독특한 회화적 제스쳐를 통해 새로운 표현의 장을 넓히고 있다. 개성이 드러나는 세 작가의 작품은 작가 자신의 감정과 생각을 가장 솔직하고 진실한 방식으로 표현하고 있다.

Expression refers to the outward articulation of thoughts or emotions through words, writings, or actions. In other words, expression includes all forms of communication that demonstrate internal things such as emotions, thoughts, and ideas externally, and is achieved through not only verbal ways but also non-verbal ways (art, music, gestures, etc.).

The methods of expression employed by artists are highly diverse. It varies depending on the attributes of the medium, that responds to the five senses, as well as the individuality of the creator, cultural background, materials used, and the desired message to be conveyed. The artist forges his or her distinctive expressive technique by blending one or multiple of these approaches. In particular, modern art, which started to dawn in the late 19th century, rejected the long tradition of painting that imitated the world as it is and began to appear in various forms of art simultaneously. The universal styles of the past that dominated the era no longer existed, and various individualized experimental art trends/isms/movements emerged, and they influenced each other, creating new art. The coexistence of varied expressions is recognized as a crucial component of modern art. Beyond simple artistic skills, it offers viewers an opportunity to understand the artist's intrinsic perspective through expressions that reflect the creator’s inner world and outlook on life, and allows them to experience a variety of interpretations and emotions. Expression methods that reveal the artist's individuality play a key role in exploring different human emotions and thoughts and pursuing deeper communication through works of art.

Exhibition 《The Way to Expression》 focuses on the diversity of modern art, especially the expression methods of painting, and introduces the works of Ha Ji-hoon, Ha Tae-im, and Ham Myung-soo, which are in line with abstract painting but are manifest in unique expressive languages.

The three artists demonstrate variations through their reassembly of thoughts, ideas, and fragments of reality-derived images and memories, and these remnants of personal experiences are skillfully amalgamated using their individual methodologies. Ha Ji-hoon delves into the structure of abstract landscapes, melding them with his personal experiences, conveyed through vibrant brushstrokes or tactile gestures involving rubbing and pushing with the hands. Ha Tae-im shows a rhythmic and captivating canvas composition by extending her arms around her body, tracing strokes along their trajectory, and layering half-curved bands of color. Ham Myung-soo persists in his continuous exploration of the painting technique called brush touch, revealing dynamic artworks characterized by distinctive overlapping methods, subtle tremors conveyed through delicate brushwork, and a beautiful harmony of movement and color.

Pablo Picasso said that artists reinterpret reality through their subjective experiences and perspectives, thereby exploring deeper truths in the process. Ha Ji-hoon, Ha Tae-im, and Ham Myeong-su, present a novel canvas where subjective emotions of the artists are captured through their unique methods of expression. The artworks of the three, each showcasing their individuality, represent the most sincere and genuine means of expressing their personal emotions and thoughts.
