“The medium is the extension of man”

미디어는 인간의 확장이다 – 마셜 매클루언(Herbert Marshall McLuhan, 1911-1980)

커뮤니케이션 이론가이자 문예 비평가인 마셜 매클루언은 인터넷이 발명되기 30년 전에 월드와이드웹(WWW)에 대해 이야기한 것으로 유명하다. 

1964년 출간된 『미디어의 이해』에서 '미디어는 메시지다'라는 견해를 통해 사회를 관통하는 미디어 효과에 주목했으며 다양한 미디어 형태가 인간의 감각과 능력을 어떻게 확장하는지 탐구했다. 미디어가 단순히 정보를 전달하는 수단이 아니라 그 자체가 메시지로, 사회와 문화에 근본적인 영향을 미친다는 이론을 전개했다.

매클루언의 관점에서 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS)를 보면, SNS의 기술적 형태와 플랫폼의 설계가 사용자의 소통방식, 정보 소비 패턴 및 사회적 관계 형성에 중대한 영향을 미친다는 것이다. 실제로 SNS는 실시간으로 정보를 공유하고 넓은 범위의 사람들과 소통하는 창구이다. 또한 SNS는 사용자가 자기 생각과 생활을 전시하는 플랫폼으로 작용하여 '자기 연출'이라는 현상을 촉진하고 있다. 이는 사회적 관계의 본질과 개인의 자아 인식에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요소이다. 결론적으로 매클루언의 이론은 SNS가 단순히 정보를 전달하는 도구가 아니라 우리의 인식, 의사소통 방식, 그리고 문화적 관습을 형성하는 중요한 매체라는 점을 이해하는 근거가 된다.

《Following : 부유하는 시선들》 展은 개인이 SNS에 올려놓은 셀카나 사진의 한 부분을 캡쳐하고 작가의 시선으로 필터링해 캔버스에 옮기는 정고요나의 작업을 소개한다.

개인이 SNS에 올린 사진은 이미 각자의 기준에 맞게 필터링되어 게시된 이미지로 타인에게 보이고 싶은 ‘자기 검열’인 동시에 그 의도가 드러나지 않기를 원하는 현대인의 욕망을 드러내는 이미지이다. 정고요나는 온라인의 이미지를 작품으로 끌어들임으로써 자신을 둘러싼 세계와 동시대의 사회상을 이해하려고 하고 있다.

이번 《Following : 부유하는 시선들》 展은 정고요나 작가의 그동안 작업의 연장선에 있는 신작을 선보인다. 사람들이 SNS에 사진을 편집해서 올리는 행위, 개인에 기준에 맞춰 ‘필터링’된 이미지에 포커스를 맞춰 개념적인 이미지를 작업한 것에서 좀 더 열려 있는, 전체를 아우르는 ‘아주 사적인 절차’를 거쳐 좀 더 작가 개인의 시선을 담는 작업들을 통해 여성작가의 시선으로 세상을 바라보는 페미닌Feminine한 이야기를 담았다.

Marshall McLuhan, a communication theorist and literary critic, is well-known for mentioning the World Wide Web (WWW) 30 years before the invention of the Internet. 

In 『Understanding Media』, published in 1964, he focused on the impacts of media permeating the society through the perspective that 'Media is a message', and explored how different forms of media expand human senses and abilities. He developed the theory that media serves not only as a conduit for information, but also as a message in itself, profoundly shaping society and culture. Examining the social network services (SNS) through the lens of McLuhan’s perspective, the technical form of SNS and the design of the platform significantly influence how users communicate, consume information, and form social relationships. In fact, SNS is a window to share information in real time and communicate with a wide range of people. In addition, it functions as a platform for users to showcase their thoughts and lives, fostering a phenomenon called ‘self-presentation’. This is an important factor that affects the nature of social relationships and an individual's self-perception. In conclusion, McLuhan's theory serves as a basis for understanding that SNS is not simply a tool to transmit information, but an important medium that shapes our perceptions, communication methods, and cultural practices.

Exhibition 《Following: Floating Gazes》 introduces the art of Jeong Goyona, who captures fragments of selfies or photos shared by individuals on social media, filters it through the artist's perspective, and transfers them onto canvas.

Photos posted by individuals on SNS are images that have already been filtered according to their own standards, reflecting both modern people's desire to be seen by others as 'self-censorship' while simultaneously guarding against revealing their true intentions.

This exhibition 《Following: Floating Gazes》 unveils new works by Jeong that is an extension of her earlier works. Through works that reflect the artist's personal gaze, the work contains a feminine story that looks at the world from the perspective of a female artist through a more open, all-encompassing ‘very private process’ of examining the act of people editing and uploading photos on SNS, and focusing on images that have been ‘filtered’ according to individual standards. I sincerely hope many to show interests in this exhibition.
