“mise-en-scène : Seeing the Invisible”

미장센 : 보이지 않는 것을 보다 (Jean-Luc Godard, 1930 – 2022, 영화감독)

미장센(mise-en-scène)은 '장면 속에 무엇인가를 놓는다'라는 뜻의 프랑스어에서 유래한 용어로 감독의 영화 연출 전반을 아우르는 개념이다. 영화의 주제를 이야기하는 스토리텔링이 플롯(plot)이라면, 미장센은 그 이야기를 시각화하는 방식이다. 단일 이미지에 담긴 형식 요소의 구도와 그것의 상관관계를 통한 메시지의 시각화에 집중하여 실체적 이미지 그 자체를 대상으로 하는 영화 미학이다.

영화평론가 앙드레 바쟁(André Bazin, 1918-1958)은 미장센을 "프레임 안에서 이루어지는 모든 시각적 요소의 배열"이라고 정의했다. (『영화란 무엇인가』, 1958~62) 카메라의 움직임, 인물의 위치, 배경, 조명 등 프레임 내의 모든 시각적 요소들이 어떻게 배열되고 상호작용을 하는지에 따라 미장센이 단순 시각적 구성을 넘어 영화의 의미와 메시지를 전달하고 결과적으로 영화의 본질적 요소로서 관객에게 현실감을 제공하는 중요 역할을 한다고 생각했다. 미장센을 통해 감독은 자신의 철학과 세계관을 드러내고, 영화는 단순히 이야기를 전달하는 것 이상의 예술적, 철학적 깊이를 가질 수 있게 되는 것이다.

《Greenroom : 그린룸》展은 영화의 한 장면처럼 장면을 연출해 캔버스 안에서 미장센을 구현하는 서동욱의 작업을 소개한다.

화면을 연출했던 경험을 그림 속 배경으로 반영한 서동욱의 작업은 허구적인 상황을 만들어 인물의 포즈를 정하고 빛, 조명, 배경 등을 의도적으로 연출하여 작업한다. 촬영한 사진을 화폭에 옮겨낸 장면은 사실적인 묘사에 색과 질감이 더해져 고독감과 상실감이 드러난 인물의 상황에 공감을 불러일으킨다.

이번 《Greenroom : 그린룸》展은 서동욱 작가의 캔버스 속 미장센 작업의 연장선에 있는 신작을 선보인다. Green(녹색)을 베이스로 익숙한 방안 풍경, 밤 해변의 청춘 군상을 영화 속 장면과도 같이 서사가 함축된 장면 연출에 작가의 화법이 더해져 회화 속 인물의 내밀한 의식 세계로의 감정이입 경험을 통한 예술적 카타르시스를 선보인다.

"Mise-en-scène" is a term derived from the French phrase meaning "arrangement of scenery" that refers to the overall concept of a director's film direction, encompassing everything within a scene. If storytelling, which conveys the theme of a film, is the plot, then mise-en-scène is the way of visualizing that story. It is a film aesthetic that focuses on conveying messages through the arrangement of formal elements within a single image and their relationships, targeting the actual image itself.

Film critic André Bazin(1918-1958) defined mise-en-scène as "the arrangement of all visual elements within the frame." (『What is Cinema?』, 1958-62) He thought that mise-en-scène played a significant role in delivering the meaning and message of the film beyond simple visual composition, and as a result, providing a sense of reality to the audience as an essential element of the film depending on how all the visual elements within the frame, such as the movement of the camera, the position of the characters, the background, and the lighting, are arranged and interact with each other. The director expresses his or her philosophy and worldview via mise-en-scène, allowing the film to achieve artistic and philosophical depth that transcends mere storytelling.

The exhibition 《Greenroom》 introduces the work of Dongwook Suh, who stages his canvas like a scene from a movie and realizes mise-en-scène on canvas.

The artist’s work, where his experience of directing a screen is reflected in the background of his paintings, constructs a fictional scenario by setting the characters’ poses and deliberately controlling the light, lighting, and background. The scene where a photograph is transferred to the canvas adds color and texture to the realistic description, evoking empathy for the character's situation of loneliness and a sense of loss.

This exhibition showcases the artist’s latest pieces that build upon his mise-en-scène works on canvas. Tinted with green, Suh’s art of drawing, added to the scene direction with a narrative that is similar to a movie scene such as a familiar room and a group of young people on a night beach, presents artistic catharsis through the experience of empathizing with the intimate world of the characters in the painting. Hope this exhibition draws attention from many.
