일상에서 보고 듣고 느끼고 마주하는 풍경을 현대적인 화법으로 풀어내는 신준민은 '빛'이 품고 있는 풍경에 주목한다.

자신의 기억 속 파편들로 이루어진 상상의 풍경이나 일상 속 익숙한 길에서 마주한 낯선 순간, 동물원과 같은 전시된 자연 등을 주요 소재로 구상과 추상의 경계를 넘나드는 작업을 선보였다.

작가에게 빛은 그날의 온도나 바람, 소리, 색채 등 빛과 풍경의 상황에 따라 다양한 감각적 형태로 받아들여진 하나의 새로운 감각의 기억이다. 빛의 순간적인 잔상들로부터 떠오르는 ‘어떤 것’은 신준민의 화법을 통해 캔버스에 담긴다. 빛의 형상은 수많은 붓질이 겹쳐지고 흘러내리면서 형체가 사라짐과 동시에 새로운 형태가 형성된다. 불꽃과 같은 뜨겁고 묵직한 느낌의 빛은 물감의 물성을 얹어내는 방식으로, 차가운 느낌의 빛은 물감을 닦아내는 방식으로 섬세하게 표현한 신준민의 빛은 특정한 형상이 없는 빛이 공간과 조건에 따라 변화하는 빛의 형상을 포착함으로써 물질성과 비물질성, 구상과 추상의 경계점, 가시성과 비가시성 사이에 교차되는 지점을 회화로 표현한 것이다.

신준민은 영남대학교 회화과를 졸업하고 동대학원 회화과를 석사 졸업했다. 2014년 봉산문화회관에서의 첫 개인전을 시작으로 보안여관 서울에서<NEW LIGHT>(2022), 아트스페이스 펄에서 <산책>(2022) 등 10회의 개인전을 진행했으며 다수의 그룹전에 참여했다.

Through his contemporary paintings, Shin explores the landscapes we see, hear, feel, and experience in our daily lives. Drawing from imaginary scenes composed of fragments of his own memories, unfamiliar moments encountered along familiar paths, and curated nature such as zoos, his works blur the line between figuration and abstraction. For the artist, light serves as a new sensory memory, perceived through various forms depending on the interplay of light and landscape, influenced by factors, including temperature, wind, sound, and color. The ‘something’ that emerges from the fleeting afterimages of light is captured on canvas through his painting technique. As shapes of light disappear and transform, they are overlaid and dripped with countless brushstrokes. By layering the materiality of paint, Shin delicately conveys both the hot, heavy light of a flame and the cool light achieved by wiping away the paint. His work captures the ever-changing forms of light, reflecting the interplay of space and conditions at the intersection of materiality and immateriality, figuration and abstraction, visibility and invisibility.

Shin graduated from Yeungnam University’s Department of Painting and received his MFA from Dongguk University’s Department of Painting. Starting with his first solo exhibition at Bongsan Cultural Center in 2014, he has held 10 solo exhibitions, including NEW LIGHT (2022) at Boan Stay Seoul and Stroll (2022) at Art Space Pearl, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions.
