Hyungjin Park: Three in the afternoon

인문학자 도나 해러웨이는 인간과 비인간을 '서로를 만들어 가는 동반 종(companion species)’으로 정의하고 존재와 이해의 최소 단위를 관계로 전환했습니다. 그의 저서 『When Species Meet』(종과 종이 만날 때)에서 관계가 존재와 분석의 가장 작은 단위임을 분명히 하고 윤리를 규범의 선언이 아니라 응답-능력(response-ability) 즉 서로 얽혀 있음에 잘 응답하려는 훈련으로 제기했습니다. 이것은 누가 누구를 고유하고 길들임이 아니라 '함께 되기(becoming with)의 과정이라 할 수 있습니다.** '동물에게 올바른 질문을 하면 세계가 달리 열린다'라고 말한 철학자이자 동물 행동학자인 뱅시안 데스프레는 관찰의 태도를 공동하는 사유로 바꾸자고 제안했습니다. 인간 시선 중심의 '닫혀 있는 감각'을 '함께 사유하기'로 전환함으로써 인간과 동물이 서로에게 영향을 미치며 함께 생각하고 감정을 나눈다는 관점으로, 동물을 단순한 연구 대상이 아닌 상호작용을 하는 주체로 바라봐야 한다고 강조했습니다. ***

《오후 3시 Three in the Afternoon》 展은 일상의 기록이자 일기를 닮은 회화로 아이와 개가 등장하는 〈마음의 정원〉 연작과 〈Bittersweet〉을 통해 돌봄과 공존의 감정을 구체화 해온 박형진의 신작을 선보입니다.
박형진의 작업은 집과 정원에서 이어지는 삶의 루틴, 가족 그리고 반려동물과 맺는 관계, 계절의 흐름 속에서 형성된 유기적 관계에서 출발합니다. 매일의 감정과 미세한 감각을 일기와 같이 화면에 기록하고, 물감을 칠하고 말리고 닦아내는 행위를 축적하여 사적인 경험을 타인과 공유할 수 있는 감각적 언어로 변환합니다. 확대한 식물 도상과 '아이'와 '개'의 포옹과 머묾은 시간과 내면의 리듬을 한 화면에 공존하게 합니다. 관객은 작품을 '보는' 존재에서 그 안에 '머무르는' 존재로 전환되며 화면 속 정원에 자신의 기억과 이야기를 겹쳐 읽게 됩니다.

이번 전시에서는 '마음의 정원'을 찾는 모든 생명체의 작은 목소리에 귀 기울여 가족의 일원으로서 고독과 외로움, 상처를 서로 치유하고 삶의 즐거움이자 의지가 되는 여러 대상과의 '교감'을 담은 작품을 통해 희생과 사랑, 배려 등의 다양한 관계에 대한 성찰을 담아낸 작품을 만나볼 수 있습니다.

Donna Haraway, a humanities scholar, defined humans and non-humans as ‘companion species who co-create each other’ and shifted the smallest unit of existence and understanding into relationships. In her book 『When Species Meet』, she makes clear that relationships are the smallest unit of existence and analysis, while presenting ethics not as a declaration of norms, but as a training in respond-ability, that is, the ability to respond well to being entangled with one another. This can be described not as one possessing or domesticating the other, but as a process of ‘becoming with’ one another.** Vinciane Despret, a philosopher and ethologist who said, ‘the world opens up differently if we asked the right questions to animals’ proposed changing the attitude of observing into a mode of thinking together. It is a view that humans and animals influence each other and think and feel together by shifting the 'closed sense' centered on human perspective to 'thinking together', in which Despret emphasized that animals should be seen as interacting subjects rather than as mere subjects of research.***


《Three in the Afternoon》 exhibition presents new works by Hyungjin Park, who has been embodying emotions of care and coexistence through <Bittersweet> and the <Mindgarden> series featuring children and dogs, paintings that resemble diaries and records of daily life.
Her work begins with the daily routines that continue at her home and in the garden, relationships with family and companion animals, and relationships formed in the flow of seasons. She records her everyday emotions and subtle sensations on the canvas as if writing a diary, and transforms those personal experiences into a sensory language that can be shared with others by accumulating the act of painting, drying, and wiping. The magnified plant icons and the cuddling and staying of a ‘child’ and a ‘dog’ allow the rhythms of time and inner side to coexist within a single frame. The audience is transformed from beings who 'view' the work to beings who 'stay' within it, and reads their own memories and stories layered with the garden on the canvas.


This exhibition features works that reflect on various relationships, including sacrifice, love, and consideration through paintings that listen to the small voices of all living things seeking a ‘mindgarden’, heal each other's solitude, loneliness, and wounds as members of a family, and 'communicate' with different objects that become the joy and support of life.
