'도예가의 물레 선생님'으로 불릴 만큼 기술적으로 완성된 작가 윤상현은 공예가로서의 탄탄한 기술을 바탕으로 코발트와 동의 성분을 배합해 만들어낸 작가 고유의 결정 유약을 사용해 자신만의 독창적인 작품세계를 선보인다.

형태를 만드는 일은 마음에 들여놓은 형상이 실제 존재할 때 비로소 마무리된다고 말하는 작가는 물레 성형과 면 깎기를 반복적으로 수행하여 그릇의 외형을 형성하고, 조형적 리듬을 형성한다.

다양한 크기와 비례로 구현된 작품은 시각적 역동성을 드러낸다. 여기에 작가가 고안한 유약의 푸른 빛은 가마 내에서 고온의 열과 우연적 조건이 맞물려 각기 다른 결정유를 만들어낸다. 그것은 밤하늘의 은하수나, 눈꽃처럼 아스라이 도자 표면에 맺혀 독보적인 예술적 깊이를 더한다.

그의 달항아리는 조선 시대 달항아리가 지닌 비대칭적 조형미의 재현에서 머무르지 않는다. 보다 정제되고 날렵한 라인을 통해 윤상현만의 조형적 언어를 드러난 그의 달항아리는 세련된 곡선에서 현대적인 아름다움이 배어 나와 윤상현만의 선을 통해 담백한 아름다움을 전한다.

경희대학교 도예과 학사, 국민대학교 대학원 석사를 졸업하고 서울과학기술대학교 박사과정을 수료한 윤상현 작가는 현재까지 활발한 작품활동을 통해 도예작품을 선보이고 있다. 다양한 식기류를 비롯해 달항아리, 화병등을 빚는다.

Yoon Sanghyun, often referred to as the “master potter’s wheel teacher” for his technical mastery, presents a distinctive body of work that draws upon his solid foundation as a craftsman. Utilizing his own uniquely developed crystalline glaze—created through the careful combination of cobalt and copper—he establishes a singular artistic language. For Yoon, the act of shaping is only complete once the image held within his mind has materialized into tangible form. Through the repeated processes of wheel throwing and facet carving, he constructs vessel forms imbued with sculptural rhythm. Realized in a variety of sizes and proportions, his works convey a strong sense of visual dynamism.

The luminous blue hue of his glaze, conceived by the artist himself, undergoes transformation in the kiln, where high heat and contingent conditions converge to yield unique crystalline structures. These crystalline patterns, reminiscent of the Milky Way scattered across a night sky or delicate frost flowers, settle upon the ceramic surface and impart an unparalleled depth of artistic expression.

Yoon’s moon jars do not simply replicate the asymmetrical aesthetics of their Joseon-dynasty antecedents. Instead, through refined and streamlined contours, he articulates his own sculptural vocabulary. The elegant curves of his moon jars emanate a distinctly modern beauty, offering a serene and understated aesthetic that is uniquely his own.

Yoon Sanghyun earned his BFA in Ceramics from Kyung Hee University, his MFA from Kookmin University Graduate School, and completed his doctoral coursework at Seoul National University of Science and Technology. Actively engaged in his artistic practice, he continues to produce a wide range of works, from tableware to moon jars and vases, contributing a unique presence to the contemporary field of ceramic art.
