김현식은 투명한 에폭시 레진과 안료를 매체로 평면 회화의 한계를 확장해 온 작가이다.

캔버스 위에 레진을 바르고 굳힌 후 송곳이나 칼로 선을 긁어낸 자리에 안료를 채우고 닦아내는 작업을 반복하여 선과 선 사이에 미세한 틈과 공간감을 만들어낸다. 이 과정은 최소 7~10번, 선 긋기로는 5000번에서 1만 번에 이르며 집적된 그의 행위를 통해 완성된 작품은 단순한 평면을 넘어 3차원적 공간을 경험하게 한다.

투명한 레진과 화려한 안료, 그리고 빛의 상호작용을 통해 평면 속에서 고요하면서도 에너지로 충만한 공간을 만들어 내는 작업은 대표 연작 <Beyond Color> 연작에서 더욱 두드러지는데, 겹겹이 쌓인 선들 사이의 투명한 틈새는 명상적이고도 본질적인 공간으로 빠져들게 한다. 멀리서 보았을 때 아름다운 색 면으로 느껴지지만, 가까이 다가갈수록 섬세하게 그어진 선들과 그 사이에 형성된 공간이 드러난다. 관람자는 평면 회화 속에서 입체적 공간을 경험하게 되며, 외면에서 내면으로, 물질에서 본질로 향하는 여정을 체험하게 된다.

선과 색, 그 사이의 공간에서 자신만의 감각과 의미를 발견하도록 유도하는 김현식의 작업은 시각적 즐거움을 넘어 평면 속 공간이라는 불가능의 가능성을 구현한다. 미세한 선 긋기의 흔적을 통해 우리가 느낄 수 있는 빛의 울림과 에너지를 전달하는 그가 만들어낸 평면 위 공간은 물질적 차원을 넘어 근원에 대한 작가의 깊은 사유와 질문을 담고 있다.

홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과를 졸업하고 울산에서 거주하며 작업하는 김현식은 학고재, 모거모던아트(런던), 아트 로프트(브뤼셀) 노블레스 컬렉션, 국립현대미술관(과천), 부산시립미술관, 시안미술관(경북 영천) 등 주요 기관의 개인전 및단체전에 참여했다. 아트바젤 홍콩, 아트 브뤼셀(벨기에), 아트 파리스(프랑스) 등 해외 아트페어에서 주목받았으며 제1회 하인두 예술상을 수상했다.

Kim Hyunsik is an artist who has expented the boundaries of traditional painting by using transparent epoxy resin and pigments as his mediums. He creates subtle gaps and a sense of spatial depth between the lines by applying resin to the canvas, letting it harden, then repeatedly scratching lines into the surface with an awl or knife, filling the grooves with pigment and wiping it away. This process is repeated at least 7 to 10 times with 5,000 to 10,000 strokes and the completed work, shaped by the accumulated actions, provides an experience of three-dimensional space rather than a simple flat surface. Through the interplay of transparent resin, vibrant pigments, and light, Kim creates spaces within the surface that are serene yet filled with energy. This approach is particularly prominent in his signature series <Beyond Color> where the transparent gaps between the layers of overlapping lines draw viewers into a meditative and fundamental space. From a distance, it appears as a beautiful field of color, but upon closer inspection, the finely drawn lines and the spaces formed between them become visible. The viewers experience special depth within the flat painting, embarking on a journey from the external to the internal, and from the material to the essential. Kim’s work encourages us to discover our own sensations and interpretations within the lines, colors, and spaces between, going beyond visual pleasure to achieve the seemingly impossible, creating a sense of space on a flat surface. The plane created by his delicate traces of lines that captures the resonance and energy of light, reflects the artist’s profound contemplation and questions about the essence of existence that surpasses the material realm.

Kim, a graduate of the Painting Department at Hongik University, resides and works in Ulsan. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions at prominent institutions such as Hakgojae, MoCA Modern Art (London), Art Loft (Brussels), Noblesse Collection, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Gwacheon), the Busan Museum of Art, and the Sian Art Museum (Gyeongbuk Yeongcheon). He gained recognition at international art fairs such as Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Brussels (Belgium), and Art Paris (France), and was honored with the inaugural Ha Indoo Art Award.
