Lee Kang Wook has consistently explored the organic interconnectedness of living beings and the flow of the universe, using the motif of cells as a central element in his work. In his early practice, he depicted an “expanded gaze” on the world through concrete forms such as hands, leaves, and cellular structures. Over time, he began to erase the outlines of these subjects and layer abstract forms to construct cosmic structures on the canvas. Through diverse painterly experiments, he imbues his surfaces with both depth and movement. By combining materials such as acrylic, pencil, coating, and glass beads, he builds a multilayered visual world that mirrors the complex inner structures of living organisms.
Since 2015, Lee has expanded his practice through the Gesture series, which captures the rhythm and movement of cells using more daring colors and visible traces of action. This body of work traverses the boundary between Eastern philosophy and Western abstraction, drawing inspiration from the ancient Indian philosophy of the Upanishads. His paintings can be read as an attempt to visualize the unity between the individual soul (Atman) and the cosmic whole (Brahman) on the canvas. Focusing on the theme of “Invisible Space,” his work sensorially reveals the continuous flow of time and space through lines, tones, materiality, and layering. While Lee’s practice aligns with the tradition of Korean monochrome painting—marked by restraint, repetition, and material exploration—he transforms these elements with a refined painterly language that incorporates ornamentation and intricate layering. The shimmering effects, depth, and complex layers hidden within seemingly simple forms elicit different sensory responses depending on the viewer’s position and lighting conditions, creating a new illusory space that transcends the flatness of painting. Ultimately, Lee Kang Wook’s work proposes another abstract cosmos—one that uses the two-dimensional canvas as a medium for thought and perception, connecting the movements of the universe with our inner world.

TEXTS

“I have always questioned myself and contemplated the essence of painting.
In my early twenties, as I began asking questions about myself, I took a biological approach. I focused on cells—the fundamental components that make up who I am—and studied them. As I continuously magnified and observed cells and particles, I discovered within them an infinite space, like a universe. It was also a time when theories such as fractals, the Big Bang, and the genome were being actively explored.
I spent seven years in London, devoting myself to deep reflection on the self. During this period, I came to a realization through the Upanishads, learning how to connect and reconcile relative or opposing concepts into a unified whole. Even conflicting ideas can become neither ‘one or the other’ nor ‘both,’ but ‘that which simply is.’ This became a meaningful time for reflecting on life, as well as on my work.”
