베를린을 무대로 활동하는 현대미술가 조주현은 두 개의 프로젝트 - '일상 드로잉 프로젝트 (@project.dear.diary)', ‘A Work towards Incomplete(미완성을 향한 일)' - 를 통해 일상에서 마주한 사건과 경험을 형태와 색, 질감으로 세분화하여 시각화한 마음 풍경화 (Mindscape)를 선보입니다.

작가는 드로잉이라는 방식으로 자신과 주변 사람들의 감정, 기억, 갈등, 연대, 회복의 순간들을 포착합니다. 그리고 이 개인의 서사, 미시사(micro history)가 사회적인 문제들과 만나는 지점을 시각적으로 풀어냅니다. 그렇게 수집된 164개의 드로잉들은 각각의 삶의 단면을 담고 있으며, 작가는 이를 모아 하나의 이상적인 풍경, 즉 ‘공존의 마인드스케이프(mindscape)’로 재구성합니다. 이 풍경은 실재하는 장소가 아니라, 우리가 함께 상상하고 꿈꾸는, 그러나 아직 실현되지 않은 공존의 공간입니다.

또한 작가는 예술적 노동의 가치와 창의성을 강조하고 예술적 창작 과정의 중요성과 그 속에서 느끼는 즐거움을 강조하기 위해 작품을 구상하면서 화면에 남겨지는 모든 흔적(스케치, 보조선, 의도적으로 색칠되지 않은 미완성의 부분 등)을 통해 창작 과정이 드러나도록 했습니다. 부분마다 보이는 미완성의 상태는 예술의 과정이 계속 진행 중임을 의미하고 예술가의 존재와 작품 그리고 관객과의 사이에 지울 수 없는 영원한 연결을 상징합니다.

조주현은 드로잉, 회화(한국의 진채화), 디지털 미디어, 조각, 설치 등 여러 매체를 이용하여 탐구를 이어가고 있습니다.

‘미시사(micro history)’와 공존을 중심으로, 역사와 사회의 모세혈관과 같은 역할을 하는 개인들의 이야기에 주목하는 서사를 이어가고 있는 조주현 작가는 앞으로 베를린과 한국을 오가며 작업의 지평을 확장해 나갈 예정입니다.

Juheon Cho, a contemporary artist based in Berlin, offers us Mindscape that visualizes the events and experiences encountered everyday by breaking them down into shapes, colors and textures through two projects – ‘Daily drawing project (@project.dear.diary)' and ‘A Work towards Incomplete’

She captures moments of emotion, memory, conflict, solidarity and recovery within herself and those around her with drawing, and visually unfolds the point where this personal narrative, i.e., micro history intersects with social issues. Each of 164 drawings collected in this way contains a sliced portion of life, and the artist reconstructs them into an ideal landscape, a ‘Mindscape of coexistence’. This non-existing landscape is a space of coexistence we imagine and dream of together, but which has not yet been realized.

To emphasize the value and creativity of artistic labor and the importance of the creative process and the joy felt in it, she made the creative process visible by leaving all the traces (sketches, auxiliary lines, unfinished parts that are intentionally left uncolored, etc.) remained on the canvas that were made while conceiving the work. The unfinished state visible in each part signifies the ongoing artistic process and symbolizes the indelible and eternal connection between the artist, the work, and the viewers.

Cho is continuing her explorations using various media including drawing, painting (Korean Jinchaehwa), digital media, sculpture and installation.

The artist, who continues to create narratives that focus on the stories of individuals who serve as the capillaries of history and society centered around ‘micro history’ and coexistence, plans to expand the horizons of her work in both Berlin and Korea.

“나는 세상의 이야기를 듣고 작업실에 돌아가 매일 공들여 무언가를 만들고, 붓질을 하며, 그 안에서 창의성과 행복을 느낍니다.

… 내 작업은 언제나 이야기에서 시작됩니다. 처음에는 나 자신의 내면에서 불쑥 솟아오른 서사와 심상들을 드로잉으로 옮기기 시작했어요 …

… 나는 또 한 번의 변화를 앞두고 있어요. 하지만 예술을 통해 내가 지키고 싶은 것들은 더욱 선명해지고 있습니다. 계속 사람들의 이야기를 그리고, 공존을 이야기할 거예요. 나는 이 노동, 이 일 안에서 영원한 즐거움을 느껴요. 이 모든 작업은 단절된 듯 보이는 세계를 다시 엮어보려는 시도입니다.

나의 이야기와 너의 이야기, 그리고 우리 모두의 이야기를 한 화면에 나란히 놓고, 그 사이의 공명과 불협을 함께 들여다보는 것. 어쩌면 그것이야말로 오늘날 예술이 할 수 있는 가장 진실된 일일지도 모릅니다.

… 나는 말하고 싶습니다. 예술이 슬픔과 갈등, 불안을 보살피지 않는다면, 무엇이 우리를 돌아봐 줄 수 있겠느냐고. 우리는 아직 여유로울 수 없습니다.

하지만, 우리는 잘하고 있습니다.“

“I go back to my studio, work hard to make and paint something after listening to stories of the world, and I feel creativity and happiness in doing so.

… My work always begins with a story. At first, I transferred the narratives and images that arose within me into drawing …

… I’m facing another change. However, the things I’d like to preserve through art are becoming clearer. I will continue to draw stories of the people and talk about coexistence. I find eternal pleasure in this labor, in this work. All these processes are an attempt to weave back the seemingly disconnected world.

Juxtaposing stories of mine, yours, and ours all together on one canvas and looking at the resonance and dissonance in between. Perhaps, that’s the most truthful thing art can do today.

… I want to say. If art doesn’t care for sadness, conflict and anxiety, what can? We can’t rest yet.

However, we’re doing well.”
