세상을 바꾸기 위해 필요한 것은 “작은 귀여움”
《Into the Candyverse》 展에서는 인간과 동물, 그리고 자연, 나아가 인간과 인간의 ‘관계 회복’을 화두로 다양한 매체를 적극 활용하여 특유의 뛰어난 조형감각과 세련된 기법으로 캐릭터 조각이라는 자신만의 길을 걸어온 작가 노준의 캔디 페인팅 신작을 소개한다.
메타버스(Metaverse)는 가공, 추상을 의미하는 메타(Meta)와 현실 세계를 의미하는 유니버스(Universe)의 합성로 1992년, 공상과학 소설에서 첫 등장했다. 메타버스는 웹과 인터넷 등의 가상세계가 현실과 결합한 형태로 게임이나 소셜 네트워크 서비스(SNS)는 물론 교육, 의료 등 모든 산업에 활용되는 네트워크 기술 기반의 현대 IT 산업의 핵심 키워드이다. 그렇다면 캔디버스는 무엇일까? 맛이 달고 물에 잘 녹는 결정체인 사탕(Candy) 와 현실 세계(Universe)의 합성어인 캔디버스는 모든 갈등과 다툼이 해소된 이상적이면서도 아름다운 세상으로 작가 노준이 꿈꾸고 빚어내고 있는 새로운 우주 : New Space 이자 상징이라고 할 수 있다.
노준의 동물 캐릭터들은 동글동글하고 귀엽다. 작품 속 동물이 보여주는 표정이나 동작은 우리의 정서와 행동을 담고 있다. 누구나 알고 있는 동물의 모습은 지극히 주관적이고 추상적인 현대미술의 피로감과 어려움을 느낀 관객에게 ‘귀여운 동물’이라는 시각적인 익숙함에서 오는 편안함과 즐거움을 선사한다. 여기에 작가만의 독특한 개성과 위트를 담은 동물 조형 언어와 나무, 돌, FRP, 스틸, 청동 등 다양한 매체의 결합. 그리고 자유자재로 구사하는 카 페인팅, 캔디 페인팅을 통한 독특한 색채표현은 작품에 재미를 더한다. 동물 캐릭터 조각에 담긴 노준의 이야기는 단순 귀엽기만 한 조각이 아니라 깨지거나 단절된 관계의 회복, 대상의 존경과 사랑을 통한 관계의 회복을 희망하는 메시지를 담고 있다.
이번 <Into the Candyverse>의 Candy 페인팅 작업은 그동안의 작품보다 더 작고 컬러풀한 캐릭터를 선보인다. 동물 캐릭터에 비구상적인 표현을 더 하고 파랑과 분홍, 녹색과 노랑, 보라가 함께하는 오로라 같은 알록달록한 광택 옷을 입고 있는 캐릭터들은 마치 다양한 포장지에 싸여 있는 사탕 같기도 하다. 작업을 관철하는 관계 회복이라는 키워드는 세상을 바꾸는 작용을 불러일으킬 수 있는 전제가 되는 중요 요소 중 하나로, 노준은 그의 캐릭터와 함께 캔디버스를 통해 우리에게 행복을 선사하기 위해 계속해서 진화하고 있다.
The exhibition Into the Candyverse is a solo exhibition by Noh Jun, an artist who actively utilizes various media with the theme of ‘restoring relationships’ between humans and animals, nature, and furthermore, humans. Introducing a new candy painting by an artist who has walked his own path of character sculpture with his unique outstanding formative sense and sophisticated technique.
Metaverse is a combination of meta, which means processing and abstraction, and universe, which means the real world, and first appeared in science fiction in 1992. Metaverse is a combination of the virtual world such as the web and the Internet with reality, and is a key keyword in the modern IT industry based on network technology used in all industries such as education and medical care as well as games and social network services (SNS). So, what is Candyverse? Candyverse is a combination of Candy, a crystal candy that is sweet and soluble in water, and Universe, the real world. Candyverse is an ideal and beautiful world where all conflicts and quarrels are resolved, and it can be said to be a new space and symbol that Noh Jun is dreaming of and creating.
Noh Jun's animal characters are round and cute. The facial expressions and movements of animals in the work contain our emotions and actions. The appearance of animals that everyone knows provides comfort and pleasure from the visual familiarity of ‘cute animals’ to the audience who feels the fatigue and difficulties of extremely subjective and abstract contemporary art. Here, the artist's unique personality and wit are combined with animal modeling language and various media such as wood, stone, FRP, steel, and bronze. In addition, the unique color expression through car painting and candy painting, which is used freely, adds fun to the work. Noh Jun's story contained in animal character sculptures is not just a cute piece, but contains a message of hope for restoration of a relationship that has been broken or severed and through respect and love for the target.
The Candy painting work of <Into the Candyverse> presents smaller and more colorful characters than previous works. Non-figurative expressions are added to the animal characters, and the characters wearing colorful glossy clothes like aurora with blue and pink, green and yellow, and purple are like candy wrapped in various wrapping papers. The keyword of restoring relationships that accomplishes the work is one of the important elements that are the premise that can bring about a world-changing effect, and Noh Jun continues to evolve to bring happiness to us through Candyverse with his character.
