발견은 언제나 낯선 곳에서만 일어나는 일은 아닙니다. 오히려 오래 곁에 있었지만 미처 알아차리지 못했던 사물과 풍경, 지나간 기억과 감정을 어느 순간 전혀 다른 눈으로 마주하게 될 때 찾아옵니다. 매일 보던 빛, 스쳐 지나간 장면, 익숙하다고 믿었던 세계가 문득 낯설게 열리는 순간, 우리는 새로운 것을 얻기보다 이미 그곳에 있었던 감각을 다시 발견하게 됩니다.

키미작의 개인전 《Moon Took — 문득, 발견의 순간》 展은 문법적 규칙을 살짝 벗어난 시적 표현 “Moon Took”에서 출발합니다. 영어로는 낯설지만 소리와 감각으로는 한국어 '문득'에 닿아 있는 이 제목은 예기치 않은 깨달음과 우연한 발견의 순간을 은유합니다. 작가가 어린 시절 밤길에서 경험했던 달에 대한 기억, 달이 자신을 따라오는 것인지 자신이 달을 쫓고 있는 것인지 알 수 없었던 오래된 질문은 이번 전시에서 꿈, 행복, 자유, 이루고 싶은 어떤 모습처럼 가까이에 있지만 쉽게 손에 닿지 않는 마음의 방향으로 확장됩니다.

이번 전시에서 키미작은 달빛과 태양, 공과 경기장, 수면과 균형, 놀이와 호흡의 장면들을 통해 '문득' 발견되는 감정의 순간을 펼쳐 보입니다. 화면 속 군상들은 때로는 경기 중인 선수처럼, 때로는 서커스의 수행자처럼, 때로는 유년의 기억 속 인물처럼 등장합니다. 그러나 이들의 움직임은 승패나 목적지보다 그 과정에서 발생하는 긴장과 리듬, 균형과 여운에 집중합니다. 작가는 새로운 풍경을 찾아 나서기보다 늘 그 자리에 있었지만 잊고 지내던 빛을 다시 마주하는 방식으로 삶의 감각을 회화 안에 불러냅니다.

《Moon Took — 문득, 발견의 순간》은 익숙한 세계가 어느 날 다른 의미로 다가오는 순간에 대한 전시입니다. 강렬한 색채와 절제된 형태로 현실과 비현실의 경계를 넘나드는 키미작의 독창적인 회화는 가까이에 있었지만 미처 알아차리지 못했던 감정의 빛, 오래전부터 자신을 따라오고 있었던 질문, 그리고 각자가 품고 살아온 달의 존재를 다시 바라보게 합니다. 작품 속 익명의 인물들이 만들어내는 섬세한 조형 언어와 색채의 리듬을 따라가다 보면 어느 순간 자신만의 기억과 감정, 잊고 있던 마음의 방향을 문득 발견하게 될 것입니다.

Discovery does not always happen in unfamiliar places. It arrives rather from objects, scenery, past memories and emotions that have long been around us but went unnoticed, when we face them with entirely different eyes. In the moment when lights that we always see, scenes that quickly slid by, and the world we believed to be familiar suddenly open up as something strange, we rediscover the sense that was already there rather than gain something new.

Moon Took — A Moment of Discovery, a solo exhibition by KIMI JAAK, sets off from a poetic expression “Moon Took” that slightly deviates from grammatical convention. The title, though sounding unfamiliar in English, is in close touch with the Korean word ‘mundeuk (meaning ’suddenly’ in English)’ phonetically and emotionally, and serves as a metaphor for moments of unexpected realization and chance discovery. The artist’s memory of the moon she had on a night walk as a child, which brought up an old question of whether the moon was following her or she was chasing it, expands into a direction of one’s heart that feels close yet not within reach like a dream, happiness, freedom, or some image of what one longs to become.

In this exhibition, KIMI JAAK unfolds the ‘suddenly’ discovered moments of emotion through scenes that portray moonlight and sunlight, balls and sports ground, sleep and balance, and playing and breathing. The figures within the canvas appear at times like athletes in the midst of a match, at times like performers in a circus, or at times like figures from childhood memories. Their movements focus not on winning, losing or reaching a certain destination, but on the tension and rhythm, the balance and lingering resonance that arise in the process. The artist, instead of setting out in search of new landscapes, calls forth the sensations of life into painting by facing the light again that has always been there but has been neglected.

Moon Took — A Moment of Discovery is about moments in which a familiar world suddenly arrives bearing a different meaning. KIMI JAAK’s Unique paintings that cross the boundary between reality and unreality in intense colors and restrained form, lead the viewers to look again at the light of emotion which was near yet went unnoticed, the question that had been following us for a long time, and the presence of the moon that each of us has carried within us. Following her intricate visual language and the rhythm of colors created by the anonymous figures in the paintings will let us to suddenly discover our own memories and emotions, and the direction of our heart that has long been forgotten.
