김민수의 작업은 민화의 문양과 색채를 현대적으로 해석합니다. 민화에 등장하는 화조도, 초충도, 책거리를 비롯해 신과 영웅들이 등장하는 부적 같은 김민수의 작업은 작품 속 친국한 민화 이미지에 스타벅스 커피나 하이힐 등 현재의 기물을 배치하거나 팝아트 적인 요소를 가미해 ‘과거와 현재’를 함께 담아냅니다. 강렬한 붉은색은 예로부터 에너지의 근원이 되는 색이자 생명과 부귀, 나쁜 기운을 몰아내는 벽사(僻邪)의 의미를 지닌 색으로, 복을 기원하거나 소원을 비는 색이며 열정을 뜻하기도 합니다. 김민수는 이 붉은 색을 주조색으로 사용하여 사람들의 부귀영화, 욕망, 평안에 대한 염원을 화면 속에 표현함으로써 그들이 바라는 꿈과 희망, 안녕을 대신 바랍니다.
Kim Min-su’s work offers a contemporary interpretation of the patterns and colors of traditional Korean folk painting (minhwa). His pieces, which include motifs such as flowers and birds, insects, still-life objects, and talisman-like figures of gods and heroes, juxtapose familiar folk imagery with contemporary objects—like Starbucks coffee cups or high heels—and incorporate pop-art elements, thereby capturing both the past and the present.
The striking red color in his work has long been regarded as a source of energy, symbolizing life, wealth, and the power to ward off evil. It is a color used to pray for blessings, make wishes, and convey passion. By using red as a dominant hue, Kim Min-su expresses people’s desires for prosperity, ambition, and peace, conveying on their behalf the dreams, hopes, and well-being they seek.
