황혜선은 일상에서 마주친 순간과 무심히 지나치는 사물이 가지고 있는 이야기 그리고 그것에 담긴 기억을 드로잉한 것을 바탕으로 천, 유리, 스테인리스, 알루미늄 등의 재료를 통해 입체적으로 조각하는 ‘드로잉 조각’이라는 황혜선만의 작품 세계를 구축한 작가입니다. 언어와 이미지, 인식과 존재, 사물의 의미, 인간과 인간, 평면과 오브제 등 무언가의 사이로부터 발화한 다양한 이야기에 작가의 섬세한 관찰과 상상력을 더해 작품으로 구현합니다. 드로잉 조각은 평면적으로 보일 수 있지만, 작품을 비추는 조명이 만들어내는 그림자도 하나의 드로잉이 되어 선과 면, 그리고 그림자로 평면과 조각 사이를 넘나드는 작품으로 완성됩니다. 기억과 일상 그리고 소통이라는 주제를 오랫동안 다룬 황혜선은 일상에서 느끼는 따뜻한 이미지와 감정을 담은 작품을 통해 관람객들이 자신의 삶에서 기억하고 느끼는 감정이 상호작용하여 또 다른 관계성을 만들어나갑니다.
Hae-Sun Hwang is an artist who has developed a unique practice she calls “drawing sculpture,” transforming moments from daily life, overlooked objects, and the memories they hold into three-dimensional works using materials such as fabric, glass, stainless steel, and aluminum. She explores the space between language and image, perception and existence, the meaning of objects, human relationships, and the interaction between plane and object, infusing her delicate observations and imagination into each piece.
While her drawing sculptures may appear flat at first glance, the shadows cast by light become part of the drawing itself, creating a dynamic interplay of line, surface, and shadow that bridges the gap between two-dimensional and sculptural form. Over the years, Hwang has focused on themes of memory, everyday life, and communication. Through works imbued with warm imagery and emotions drawn from ordinary experiences, she invites viewers to engage with their own memories and feelings, fostering new relational connections.
