동물 캐릭터 조각으로 알려진 노준의 작업은 명랑하고, 달콤하며 다채로운 색과 영롱한 빛을 머금고 있어 보는 이로 하여금 친근함을 느끼게 하는 매력을 지녔다. 노준은 애니메이션, 그중에서도 클레이애니메이션이나 캐릭터 디자인 작업을 한 독특한 이력을 가진 작가로, 우리나라 최초의 클레이애니메이션 광고인 <제텐비타>(한미약품공업, 1990)의 참여를 계기로 캐릭터에 흥미를 느꼈고 관심을 키워 캐릭터 조각이라는 독창적인 작품 스타일을 오랫동안 전개해오고 있다.

실재하는 동물이지만 어딘가 실존하지 않는 노준만의 위트가 담긴 동글동글한 동물 캐릭터들 – 고양이 클로, 강아지 슬리부, 수달 수다루, 우파루파 루파파, 토끼 하야미 등 – 이 마치 인간과 같은 시선과 표정, 그리고 제스처 등을 보고 있노라면 절로 미소를 머금게 한다. 작업을 통해 전달하고자 하는 작가의 의도가 자연스럽게 전이되는 것이다.

2010년대 중반까지 이어오던 동물 이야기 이후에 인간과 인간의 관계 회복으로 넘어가기 위한 중간 과정의 작업이 등장하기 시작한다. <앨리스 Alice> 작업은 사람이 수호 캐릭터를 안고 있는 형상으로 작업 활동을 통해 전개하고 관철해온 ‘동물과 사람, 자연, 그리고 사람과 사람의 관계 회복’으로의 관계성 확장을 염두에 둔 작업이다. 이후 기존에 진행하던 밝고 경쾌한 색상, 깨끗하고 매끈한 표면이라는 특징에서 벗어나 보다 회화적이고 녹이 슨 듯한, 혹은 시간이 오래 지난 것과 같은 질감과 형태를 보여주는 작품 <-ST 시리즈>를 전개하였고, 이는 자칫 진지하지 못한, 가볍다고 느낄 수 있는 ‘동물 캐릭터 조각’에 관념적으로 자리 잡은 ‘작품으로서 가치’를 배가하여 관객과의 소통을 시도했다.

최근 작업 <캔디 시리즈>는 기존의 ‘동물 캐릭터 조각’이 가진 구상의 형태에 비구상의 형태를 덧입히는 작업을 보여준다. 1차 페인팅 작업인 리얼 크롬 코팅 이후에 빨강, 파랑, 초록, 보라, 분홍 등 투명한 안료를 도색하여 과일사탕과 같이 맑고 영롱한 캔디의 모습을 통해 시간을 박제해 놓은 듯한, 영원히 녹지 않는 사탕과도 같은 느낌을 작품에 담았다. 특히 새롭게 등장한 거북 캐릭터 <The Crease of Time-Sweet Candy Turtle>은 나이 듦에 따라 피부에 생기는 인간의 주름이 가지고 있는 ‘시간의 흐름 혹은 경과’라는 의미를 거북 등 껍데기의 표면에 빗대어 표현한 것으로 작업을 기획하고 제작하는 순간 속 작가의 시간이 작품에 박제되어 관객에게 전달되기까지의 시간의 흐름을 거북 등 껍데기에서 보이는 면과 면이 닿은 모서리가 머금은 선의 유기적인 연결 통해 전달한다.

Noh-Jun, known for his animal character sculptures, creates works that are cheerful, sweet, and imbued with vibrant colors and a shimmering light, evoking an immediate sense of familiarity and charm in viewers. The artist has a unique background in animation, particularly clay animation and character design. His interest in characters began with his participation in Korea’s first clay animation commercial, Jetenvita (Hanmi Pharmaceutical, 1990), which sparked a fascination that he has since developed into a distinctive style of character sculpture over many years.

Although based on real animals, Noh-Jun’s playful, rounded characters—such as the cat Klo, the dog Slibu, the otter Sudaru, the Upalupa Rupapa, and the rabbit Hayami—possess human-like expressions, gestures, and glances, naturally bringing a smile to the viewer’s face. Through these works, the artist’s intentions are seamlessly communicated.

By the mid-2010s, following his long-running series of animal stories, Noh-Jun began exploring intermediary works that focus on the restoration of human relationships. The Alice series depicts a person holding a guardian character, extending the themes he had developed over the years—animals and humans, nature, and ultimately, the recovery of relationships between people. Subsequently, he expanded beyond the bright, lively colors and smooth, polished surfaces characteristic of his earlier works, creating the <-ST series>, which features painterly textures, oxidized or aged surfaces, and forms that evoke the passage of time. This shift imbued his “animal character sculptures”—which could otherwise be perceived as whimsical or lighthearted—with a more conceptual and artistic value, fostering deeper communication with the audience.

In his recent Candy Series, No-Jun overlays abstract forms onto his previously figurative animal characters. After an initial painting stage using real chrome coating, he applies transparent pigments in red, blue, green, purple, and pink, producing the luminous, translucent appearance of fruit candies. These works evoke the sense of time frozen, like sweets that will never melt. In particular, the newly introduced turtle character, The Crease of Time—Sweet Candy Turtle, draws a parallel between the wrinkles that form on human skin with age—symbolizing the passage of time—and the surface of the turtle’s shell. The work captures the flow of time from the artist’s creation to the viewer’s experience, conveyed through the organic connections between the surfaces and edges of the shell.

“인간과 동물의 관계 회복, 동물들을 학대하고 죽이는 사회가 아닌 서로 더 따뜻하게 사랑할 수 있는 시대가 왔으면 좋겠다는 마음을 작품에 담아 표현하고 있다. 몇 년 전부터는 인간과 동물의 관계 회복에서 인간과 자연의 회복으로, 나아가 인간과 인간 사이의 회복까지 다소 이상적일 수도 있지만, 아름다운 세상이 됐으면 좋겠다는 희망을 안고 작업을 이어오고 있다. “

“My works express the hope for a restoration of the relationship between humans and animals—a world where animals are not abused or killed, but where humans can love them more warmly. In recent years, my focus has expanded from the recovery of human-animal relationships to the restoration of humans’ relationship with nature, and ultimately to the restoration of relationships between people. Although this vision may be somewhat idealistic, I continue my work with the hope of creating a more beautiful world.”
