손바닥만 한 도넛 작품은 흙으로 빚아 구운 뒤 각양각색의 아이싱(유약)를 입히고 스와로브스키 크리스털로 반짝임을 부여한 도넛(Dounut)은 김재용 작가에게 있어 ‘Do Not Fear‘(두려워 하지마)이라는 중의적 표현을 가진 극복의 아이콘이다. 도넛을 만들면서 색과 색을 조합하는 무수한 실험 끝에 적록색약을 극복한 작가에게 있어 도넛은 행복의 상징이자 욕심의 상징이다. 동그랗고 네모난, 때로는 캐릭터 모양 등 다양한 형태와 형형색색의 컬러, 크리스털로 반짝이는 달콤한 도넛은 보는 이로 하여금 다양한 욕망을 불러 일으킨다.

The palm-sized donut sculptures by Kim Jaeyong are crafted from clay, fired in a kiln, coated with colorful icing glazes, and adorned with Swarovski crystals for a sparkling finish. To the artist, the “Donut (Do Not Fear)” serves as a symbolic icon of overcoming fear, a play on words that embodies courage and positivity.

Through countless experiments in combining and layering colors while creating donuts, Kim—who overcame red-green color blindness—came to see the donut as both a symbol of happiness and a symbol of desire. These sweet, gleaming donuts—sometimes round, square, or even shaped like characters, presented in vivid colors and shimmering crystals—evoke a range of emotions and desires in the viewer.
