사람은 의외로 자기 자신에 대해 잘 모르고 살아갑니다. 좋아하는 것, 싫어하는 것, 취미, 습관 같은 것들을 곰곰이 떠올려 보면 평소에 생각하는 나와 진짜 나는 조금 다르다고 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 10년 전의 나와 1년 전의 나, 그리고 지금의 나는 각각의 시간대에서 형성된 경험이 축적되어 지금을 살아가고 있는 것이라 할 수 있습니다. 한 살 한 살 나이가 들어간다는 건 나만의 취향을 발견하는 과정일지도 모릅니다.

17~18세기 유럽에서 취향은 대상의 미묘한 미적 품질을 받아들이는 특별한 능력을 가리키는 말로 사용되었습니다. 18세기 후반 독일의 철학자 칸트(Immanuel Kant)는 ‘취향이란 美를 판정하는 능력이다’라고 말하였으며, 미국의 사회학자 하버트 갠스(Herbert J. Gans)는 ‘취향은 개인의 선택‘이라 이야기하기도 했습니다. 요즘의 취향이란 자유이자 나의 고유한 개성을 가지는 것으로 누구나 자기만의 취향을 가지고 있다고 할 수 있습니다. 일상의 작은 물건을 구입하는 것에서 부터 삶의 큰 결정을 하는데 있어 나만의 취향이 반영되며 나만의 취향을 발견하는 것은 삶을 더 풍요롭게 하고 재미있게 하는 요소입니다.

《취향의 발견》은 오랜 시간 자신의 취향을 지켜온 김재용, 노준, 유나얼, 이서미, 하지훈 작가의 작품을 통해 깊고 다양한 취향이 녹아 있는 세계를 소개합니다. 다섯의 작가는 취향이라고 할 수 있는 개인의 경험과, 사유를 다양한 표현방법으로 작품 속에 담아냅니다. 도넛이라는 디저트에 다양한 색채와 반짝임을 부여해 용기와 욕망을 담아내거나 의인화된 동물 캐릭터를 통해 인간과 자연, 인간과 인간 사이의 관계 회복과 행복을 꿈꾸기도 하고 흑인의 삶과 문화, 유년시절의 기억, 그리고 신앙의 믿음을 오브제들의 결합과 드로잉으로 전달하기도 합니다. 일상적으로 보고 듣고 느끼고 사유하는 것들의 소중함과 행복의 의미를 담는가 하면 감각으로 습득한 정보에 시간과 감정, 기억 등을 녹여내 풍경이라는 대상을 이질적이고 낯선 풍경으로 담아냅니다.

자신의 취향을 정확히 알고 즐긴다는 것, 타인에게 자랑스럽게 드러낼 수 있는 나만의 취향을 발견하고 그 속에서 마음껏 유영할 수 있다는 것은 부러운 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 그만큼 취향이란 것은 현대인들이 세상을 바라보고 소통하는 제 3의 눈이요 삶을 즐기는 방법이자 열정의 중요한 요소라고 할 수 있을 것입니다.

페이토 갤러리의 시작을 알리는 《취향의 발견》展에 담긴 다섯작가의 다채로운 세계를 통해 진정으로 몰입할 수 있는 열정의 대상을 발견하고 사유하는 시간이 되기를 바라며, 나아가 전시를 통해 느낀 감정과 경험에서 생성된 취향이 페이토와의 연결고리가 되기를 기대합니다.

People often live without truly knowing themselves.
When we pause to think about what we like or dislike — our hobbies, habits, and everyday choices — we sometimes realize that the person we think we are and the person we truly are may not be the same.
The “me” from ten years ago, the “me” from a year ago, and the “me” of today are all shaped by accumulated experiences formed over time.
Growing older may, in fact, be a process of discovering one’s own preferences.

In 17th–18th century Europe, the term taste referred to a special ability to appreciate the subtle aesthetic qualities of objects.
In the late 18th century, the German philosopher Immanuel Kant defined taste as “the faculty of judging beauty,” while the American sociologist Herbert J. Gans described it as “an individual’s choice.”
Today, preference represents both freedom and individuality — something everyone possesses in their own unique way.
From the smallest purchases in our daily lives to the biggest life decisions, our personal preferences are reflected in everything we do.
To discover and embrace one’s own preferences is to make life richer and more enjoyable.

《Discovering Preferences》 introduces the worlds of five artists — Kim Jaeyong, Noh Jun, Yoon Aul, Lee Seomi, and Ha Jihoon — each of whom has cultivated and maintained their own unique sense of preference over many years.
These artists embed their personal experiences and reflections — what may be called their preferences — into their works through diverse expressive languages.
Through the radiant colors and gleaming surfaces of donuts, they capture courage and desire;
through anthropomorphic animal figures, they dream of restored relationships and happiness between humans and nature, and between one another;
through the combination of objects and drawing, they convey the life and culture of Black communities, memories of childhood, and faith.
Some express the meaning of happiness and the value of everyday moments we see, hear, and feel,
while others layer time, emotion, and memory into sensory impressions, transforming familiar landscapes into scenes that feel strange and new.

To know and enjoy one’s preferences — to discover a sensibility that can be proudly revealed and freely explored — is an enviable privilege.
Preferences, in this sense, are a third eye through which modern people perceive and communicate with the world;
they are a way of enjoying life and an essential element of passion.

Marking the beginning of Peyto Gallery, 《Discovering Preferences》 presents the rich and diverse worlds of five artists.
We hope this exhibition will offer a moment to discover and reflect on the objects of your own passion —
and that the emotions and experiences you encounter here will become a lasting connection between you and Peyto.
