보이지 않는 공간의 고요한 세계 속에서 움직임을 통해 발아하는 세포의 빛

이강욱은 현미경으로 확대해서 본 세포조직에서 또 다른 세계를 발견하고 탐구하여 미시 세계 속 거시 세계, 우주라는 거대 공간 속의 수많은 세계를 보여준다. 캔버스에 세포 이미지를 전사하고 그 위에 아크릴을 여러 번 칠해 밑에 있는 이미지를 흐리게 만든 후 그 위에 펜과 연필로 드로잉을 한 다음 아크릴을 다시 칠하거나 유리구슬 등을 붙여 작업을 마무리한다. 이러한 과정의 결과물은 맨 밑의 세포 이미지와 추상적인 선 드로잉 그리고 반짝이는 오브제 또는 물감의 색들이 겹치면서 여러 가지 이미지를 연상시켜 열린 해석의 가능성을 지니고 있다.

작가는 한국과 영국에서 회화를 공부하고 지속적인 자기 탐구를 통해 자신만의 작품 스타일을 확립하여 작품세계를 확장하고 있다. 국내는 물론 국제적으로 활발히 활동하고 있는 이강욱은 세포라는 주제를 작품의 모티프로 개체와 전체 사이의 유기적 관계 집중하는 《보이지 않는 공간 Invisible Space》을 통해 적은 양의 색과 연필 자국, 유리구슬로 그만의 소우주를 구성하여 유동적인 흐름의 공간이자 경계가 사라지는 ‘새로운 공간’을 캔버스에 담았다.

이후 영국을 베이스로 활동 무대를 넓히고 인도의 고대 철학인 ‘우파니샤드’에 관심을 가지게 되면서 인간의 몸을 구성하는 세포조직체에 관한 관심을 넘어 우주적인 영속 세계(브라만)와 일시적, 가변적 세계(아트만)의 조화를 중심으로 작업 세계가 확장되었다. 두 세계는 ‘하나’라는 점을 강조하면서 우주를 구성하는 최대와 최소의 개념, 즉 ‘대립적 개념’이 우리의 일상 속, 혹은 캔버스의 화면 속에 존재함을 새로운 공간 속 움직임(Gesture)을 통해 표현하였다. 캔버스 화면 위의 세계에서 선과 톤을 중첩(layered)해 레이어를 만드는 작용을 통해 세계(공간)와 그 구성원의 끊임없는 흐름의 움직임을 담고 있다.

The Light of Cells Germinating Through Movement in the Silent World of Invisible Space

Lee Kang-wook discovers and explores another world within the microscopic structures of cellular tissues, revealing the coexistence of the microcosm and the macrocosm—countless worlds contained within the vast universe. He transfers cellular images onto the canvas, then repeatedly layers acrylic paint to blur the underlying image. Over this, he draws with pen and pencil, applies additional layers of acrylic, or attaches glass beads to complete the work. The resulting images—where the obscured cell structures, abstract line drawings, and shimmering materials or pigments overlap—evoke multiple visual associations and invite open interpretation.

Having studied painting in both Korea and the United Kingdom, Lee has developed a distinctive artistic language through ongoing self-exploration, expanding his creative universe. Actively exhibiting both domestically and internationally, he focuses on the organic relationship between the individual and the whole in his series 《Invisible Space》. Through minimal colors, delicate pencil traces, and glass beads, he constructs his own microcosm—fluid spaces where boundaries dissolve into “new spaces” on the canvas.

After relocating his practice to the UK, Lee’s artistic focus expanded under the influence of Upanishadic philosophy from ancient India. His interest grew beyond the human body’s cellular structures to encompass the harmony between Brahman (the eternal, cosmic world) and Atman (the transient, individual self). Emphasizing the unity of these two realms, Lee expresses the coexistence of opposites—the infinite and the infinitesimal—through gestures of movement within new spatial dimensions. On his canvas, the layering of lines and tones captures the ceaseless flow and rhythm of existence, reflecting the dynamic movements of the universe and its living constituents within an ever-evolving continuum of space.
