TO CHANGE THE WORLD, IT TAKES A “LITTLE CUTE”

세상을 바꾸기 위해 필요한 것은 “작은 귀여움”

《Into the Candyverse》展에서는 인간과 동물, 그리고 자연, 나아가 인간과 인간의 ‘관계 회복’을 화두로 다양한 매체를 적극 활용하여 특유의 뛰어난 조형감각과 세련된 기법으로 캐릭터 조각이라는 자신만의 길을 걸어온 작가 노준의 캔디 페인팅 신작을 소개한다.

메타버스(Metaverse)는 가공, 추상을 의미하는 메타(Meta)와 현실 세계를 의미하는 유니버스(Universe)의 합성로 1992년, 공상과학 소설에서 첫 등장했다. 메타버스는 웹과 인터넷 등의 가상세계가 현실과 결합한 형태로 게임이나 소셜 네트워크 서비스(SNS)는 물론 교육, 의료 등 모든 산업에 활용되는 네트워크 기술 기반의 현대 IT 산업의 핵심 키워드이다. 그렇다면 캔디버스는 무엇일까? 맛이 달고 물에 잘 녹는 결정체인 사탕(Candy) 와 현실 세계(Universe)의 합성어인 캔디버스는 모든 갈등과 다툼이 해소된 이상적이면서도 아름다운 세상으로 작가 노준이 꿈꾸고 빚어내고 있는 새로운 우주 : New Space 이자 상징이라고 할 수 있다.

노준의 동물 캐릭터들은 동글동글하고 귀엽다. 작품 속 동물이 보여주는 표정이나 동작은 우리의 정서와 행동을 담고 있다. 누구나 알고 있는 동물의 모습은 지극히 주관적이고 추상적인 현대미술의 피로감과 어려움을 느낀 관객에게 ‘귀여운 동물’이라는 시각적인 익숙함에서 오는 편안함과 즐거움을 선사한다. 여기에 작가만의 독특한 개성과 위트를 담은 동물 조형 언어와 나무, 돌, FRP, 스틸, 청동 등 다양한 매체의 결합. 그리고 자유자재로 구사하는 카 페인팅, 캔디 페인팅을 통한 독특한 색채표현은 작품에 재미를 더한다. 동물 캐릭터 조각에 담긴 노준의 이야기는 단순 귀엽기만 한 조각이 아니라 깨지거나 단절된 관계의 회복, 대상의 존경과 사랑을 통한 관계의 회복을 희망하는 메시지를 담고 있다.

이번 <Into the Candyverse>의 Candy 페인팅 작업은 그동안의 작품보다 더 작고 컬러풀한 캐릭터를 선보인다. 동물 캐릭터에 비구상적인 표현을 더 하고 파랑과 분홍, 녹색과 노랑, 보라가 함께하는 오로라 같은 알록달록한 광택 옷을 입고 있는 캐릭터들은 마치 다양한 포장지에 싸여 있는 사탕 같기도 하다. 작업을 관철하는 관계 회복이라는 키워드는 세상을 바꾸는 작용을 불러일으킬 수 있는 전제가 되는 중요 요소 중 하나로, 노준은 그의 캐릭터와 함께 캔디버스를 통해 우리에게 행복을 선사하기 위해 계속해서 진화하고 있다.

The exhibition 《Into the Candyverse》 presents the latest Candy Painting series by Noh Joon, an artist who has carved out his own path in the field of character sculpture. Using a variety of media, he explores the theme of relationship restoration — between humans and animals, nature, and even among humans themselves — through his refined techniques and exceptional sense of form.

The term Metaverse combines meta (meaning “beyond” or “abstract”) with universe (meaning “the real world”), first appearing in a science fiction novel in 1992. Today, the Metaverse represents a fusion of the virtual and real worlds — a core concept in modern IT industries spanning gaming, social media, education, and medicine.
By contrast, Noh Joon’s Candyverse blends candy — a sweet, crystalline confection that easily dissolves in water — with universe. It represents an ideal, harmonious, and beautiful world where conflict and discord have been resolved: a new space and symbolic universe the artist envisions and creates.

Noh Joon’s animal characters are soft, rounded, and irresistibly cute. Their expressions and gestures reflect human emotions and behavior, offering comfort and joy to viewers who may feel fatigued by the abstraction and subjectivity of contemporary art. His works fuse materials such as wood, stone, FRP, steel, and bronze, combining them with his distinctive sculptural language and witty character design. The vibrant colors achieved through his mastery of car painting and candy painting techniques add playfulness and depth.

Yet, beyond their charm, Noh’s animal sculptures convey a message of reconciliation — a hope for restoring broken relationships through respect, love, and empathy. In 《Into the Candyverse》, Noh presents smaller, more colorful characters than in his previous works. Their semi-abstract forms, shimmering in aurora-like hues of blue, pink, green, yellow, and purple, resemble candies wrapped in multicolored foil.

At the heart of his work lies the idea of relationship restoration — a vital premise for any force capable of changing the world. Through his ever-evolving characters and the luminous world of the Candyverse, Noh Joon continues his pursuit of sharing joy, empathy, and hope with us all.
