《Nothing Without You》 展은 누구나 가지고 있는 감정, 기억, 욕망 등의 인간적인 측면과 완벽하지 않은 것들에 관한 이야기를 자신의 경험과 기억에 비추어 글자에 조형화된 소리를 입혀 작업하는 이대철의 작업을 소개한다.

피터 멘델선드의 책 "What We See When We Read"(2016)는 우리가 책을 읽을 때 상상하는 것과 관련된 주제를 다룬 책이다. 이 책은 우리가 자기의 상상력과 기억을 통해 글자에서 상상하는 것들을 살펴본다. 시각적 즉, 글을 읽으면서 우리가 상상하는 것들은 우리 기억의 파편들로 이루어져 있다. 이러한 상상력은 글이 전달하는 메시지를 더욱 깊게 이해하고 더욱 흥미롭게 받아들이게 만든다. 또한 글이라는 것은 그 안에 담긴 내용뿐만 아니라, 독자가 그것을 읽는 과정에서 녹아들어 가는 개인적인 경험과 상상력 때문에 더욱 가치가 있다. 우리는 서로가 가진 경험과 상상력의 파편들을 끼워서 맞추면서 세계를 이해하게 되며, 이는 우리가 받아들인 세계를 더욱 깊이 이해하고 더욱 풍요롭게 만들어 주는 것이다.

우리는 글자를 보면서 그 글자가 표현하고 있는 상황을 인식하고, 이와 관련된 수많은 경험과 감정을 떠올린다. 이대철 작가는 이러한 글자를 주목하여, 보이는 글자를 통해 다양한 감정과 경험을 포함한 내면의 소리를 드러내는 작업을 해왔다. 힙합(hip-hop)과 그라피티(graffiti)와 같은 스트릿 문화로부터 영감을 받아, 강렬한 색감의 대비, 뒤틀리고 중첩되는 입체적인 이미지를 담은 회화, 조각, 설치, 영상 등의 작업을 통해 이를 시각적으로 표현한다.

이대철은 자기 경험과 감정, 그리고 주변의 풍경과 사람들을 글자로 표현하며 자신의 시선을 투영한다. 이대철의 글자는 작가의 개인적인 경험과 시각에서 출발해 작품을 통해 표현하고자 하는 소리, 즉 단어가 가지고 있는 음향적 파동뿐만 아니라 감상자의 감정, 경험 등의 결합 통해 우리의 감성과 상상력을 자극하며, 보는 이에게 새로운 경험과 감정을 선사한다.

이번 <Nothing Without You>展 은 글자를 통해 본인의 감정과 기억, 현재 상황, 가족에 대한 이야기를 자화상처럼 풀어나간 신작을 선보인다.  언어와 글자 안의 숨겨진 의미를 조형적으로 표현해 온 자신의 작업 작업방식에  작가 개인의 경험을 통해 가족을 바라보는 시선의 변화, 그리고 살아가는 데 있어 야기되는 불안 속에서 삶을 지탱할 수 있는 원동력이 된 가족에 관한 이야기를 풀어낸다. 이대철의 조형화된 소리 작업은 다양한 기업과의 콜라보레이션 및 공공미술 프로젝트를 통해 확장하고 있다.

The exhibition 《Nothing Without You》 presents the work of Lee Dae-cheol, who transforms letters into sculptural forms imbued with sound. His work reflects on human emotions, memories, and desires — the imperfect and deeply personal aspects of life — as seen through his own experiences and recollections.

In Peter Mendelsund’s What We See When We Read (2016), the author explores what we imagine when we read. According to Mendelsund, the images we form in our minds are constructed from fragments of our own memories and imagination. Reading is thus not only an act of decoding text but also a process of personal interpretation — a dialogue between the author’s words and the reader’s inner world. We piece together our individual experiences and memories to make sense of the world, enriching our understanding and perception of it.

Lee Dae-cheol focuses on this process of perception. Through visible letters, he reveals inner sounds that carry layers of emotion and experience. Inspired by street culture — particularly hip-hop and graffiti — he creates vivid and dynamic works using bold contrasts of color, distorted and overlapping forms, and three-dimensional compositions across painting, sculpture, installation, and video.

In his practice, Lee expresses his own emotions, experiences, and encounters with people and places through letters. His text-based works are not only visual expressions of words but also manifestations of sound — resonating through the emotional and experiential responses of the viewer. By merging sound, form, and feeling, Lee’s works invite audiences into a multisensory and introspective experience.

For 《Nothing Without You》, Lee presents a new body of work that explores his personal stories about emotion, memory, and family. These works function like self-portraits, expressing changes in his perception of family, and the sense of grounding and strength that family provides amid the uncertainties of life. His “sculptural sound” practice continues to expand through collaborations with various brands and public art projects, bridging personal narrative and collective experience.
