빛은 예술에 있어 매우 중요한 영상을 미치는 요소 중 하나이다. 빛은 시각적은 효과를 만들어내고, 분위기와 감정을 강조하며, 공간과 형태를 강화하는 등 다양한 역할을 수행한다. 작가는 빛의 색상, 명암, 강도, 방향을 조절하여 작품의 분위기와 감정을 전달하기도 하며 빛과 그림자를 조합하여 입체감과 텍스처를 강조해 작품에 깊이와 차원을 더한다. 또한 빛은 공간적인 특성과 형태를 강조하거나 숨기는 효과를 낼 수 있으며, 이는 작품의 구성과 조형성을 강조하여 시선을 유도하거나 특정한 작가 의도를 전달하는 매개가 될 수 있다. 빛은 특정한 상징이나 의미를 나타낼 수도 있다. 예를 들어 밝은 빛은 희망이나 영감을, 어두운 그림자는 불안이나 비밀스러움을 나타내기도 한다.

《빛을 모으는 자, 빛을 만드는 자 Gatherer of Light, Maker of Light》 展에서는 빛을 통해 심미적인 효과를 만들어내 독특한 경험을 선사하는 다섯 작가 권기동, 권용래, 김대신, 이은경, 이창남의 작업을 소개한다.

권기동은 도시풍경을 소재로 작가가 마주한 공간과 시간을 가공된 듯한 낯선 풍경으로 재구성하여 보여주는 독특한 스타일의 작업을 보여준다. 권용래는 차갑고 단단하며 도시적이고 현대적인 재료인 스테인리스 스틸에 빛을 더한 부조와 회화를 융합한 작업을 선보인다. 김대신은 예리한 관찰과 통찰을 통해 동·서양을 은유와 상징으로 작품에 담아내어 전통 회화와 현대미술의 결합을 시도한다. 이은경은 거울에 비춘 자화상을 통해 인간 본연의 모습을 관찰하고 자신만의 방식으로 표현한다. 이창남은 빛과 그림자로 분위기와 색을 형상화하여 공간과 사물에 머무는 시간과 빛을 작품에 담는다.

작가마다 빛을 관찰하고 창작에 활용하는 방법은 다양하다.  권기동, 권용래, 김대신, 이은경, 이창남 다섯 작가는 각기 다른 주제와 재료, 작업방식으로 각자의 뚜렷한 개성이 돋보이는 작업을 선보이면서 빛을 모으고 재구성하여 시각적인 아름다움과 감정적인 의미를 전달하고 작가의 상상력과 창의력을 통해 다양한 경험과 감정적인 영감 그리고 독특한 경험을 선사한다.

Light is one of the most crucial elements in art. It generates visual effects, enhances atmosphere and emotion, and reinforces the perception of space and form. Artists manipulate the color, brightness, intensity, and direction of light to convey mood and feeling, often combining light and shadow to emphasize texture and volume — adding depth and dimension to their work.

Light can also serve to reveal or obscure spatial qualities and shapes, directing the viewer’s gaze or communicating an artist’s intention through compositional emphasis. Beyond its visual function, light often carries symbolic meaning: bright light may suggest hope or inspiration, while darkness and shadow can evoke unease or mystery.

The exhibition 《Gatherer of Light, Maker of Light》 introduces five artists — Kwon Ki-dong, Kwon Yong-rae, Kim Dae-shin, Lee Eun-kyung, and Lee Chang-nam — each of whom creates distinctive aesthetic experiences through their unique explorations of light.

Kwon Ki-dong reconstructs urban landscapes into processed, unfamiliar scenes that blend reality and imagination, reinterpreting the time and space he encounters.
Kwon Yong-rae merges relief and painting by combining stainless steel — a cold, solid, and modern material — with light, transforming industrial surfaces into reflective and poetic forms.
Kim Dae-shin brings together Eastern and Western traditions through metaphor and symbolism, bridging classical painting and contemporary art with sharp observation and insight.
Lee Eun-kyung explores the essence of human nature through mirrored self-portraits, reflecting on the act of seeing oneself.
Lee Chang-nam captures the passage of time and the lingering presence of light within space and objects, shaping atmosphere and color through the interplay of illumination and shadow.

Each artist observes and harnesses light in their own way. Through diverse subjects, materials, and techniques, the five artists gather and reconstruct light to express both visual beauty and emotional depth. Their works invite viewers to experience imagination, sensitivity, and the transformative power of light — offering moments of reflection, wonder, and discovery.
