How was your day?  오늘 하루는 어땠나요?

지구상의 모든 생명체는 태어나서 죽음에 이르기까지 예상치 못한 장애물과 도전을 마주하면서 해법과 성취를 찾아 진화해 왔다. 그중에서도 인간은 추상적 사고, 윤리적 판단, 철학적 고찰, 문화적 발전 등 지적 능력과 관련된 이성을 가진 특유한 개체이다. 반면 동물은 본능과 직감을 통해 생존에 필요한 행동을 수행한다. 동물의 행동은 본능, 직감, 반응 등으로 이루어져 있으며 생존과 번식을 위해 자연에 적응한 것이다. 감정적 반응, 동료 간의 협력, 사회적 상호작용, 소통 등의 동물의 사회적 행동에서 인간과 유사한 점을 찾을 수 있지만, 인간의 이성과는 차이가 있으며 추상적인 사고 능력을 갖추고 있다고 볼 수 없다. 대신 동물은 자신의 환경과 생존에 적합한 방식으로 다양한 감각이 발달했다.

《One Fine Day》 展에서는 질병과 재난, 재앙 등 모든 생물의 삶과 죽음의 사이에서 일어날 수 있는 고민을 사람,동물, 식물 등을 통해 자신만의 독특한 색으로 담아내는 두 명의 작가 고현정과 김도연을 소개한다.

고현정은 이미지를 통해 사소한 재앙부터 큰 재앙을 맞이하는 사람, 동물, 그리고 식물에 대한 이야기를 전달한다. 삶의 주변에서 볼 수 있는 자연, 동식물, 그리고 인간이 겪는 크고 작은 재앙 – 불행한 것만은 아닌 – 을 마주하고 극복하는 이야기를 담는다. 그들의 모습은 비슷하지만, 다른 색깔과 다른 질감, 분위기를 통해 각각 매일 되풀이되는 일상이 같지만 다른 시간임을 보여준다.

김도연은 자신이 경험한 세상과 생각하는 세계를 섬세한 드로잉으로 담아낸다. 개인의 감각 경험을 표현하기 위해 다양한 재료와 형식을 실험하고 접목하는 독특한 드로잉 작업을 보여준다. 이야기를 전달하는 주체는 동물로, 묘하게 인간의 모습을 하고 있는 생경한 모습을 통해 개인의 경험을 바탕으로 한 허구와 우화를 생성한다.

고현정과 김도연의 작업에선 동물이 화자로 등장한다. 그러나 두 작가가 생각하고 표현하는 동물의 기호는 비슷하면서도 다른 모습을 보여준다. 고현정의 그림은 즉흥적인 이미지의 연쇄라는 점에서 김도연이 말하는 이미지 숨 고르기 방식과 연결된다. 그러나 관찰자의 시점으로 대상을 바라보는 고현정과 달리 김도연은 직접적인 경험자로서 대상을 표현하고 있다.

‘On Fine Day - 어느 멋진 날’은 다양한 의미로 사용될 수 있는 표현이다. 문자 그대로 멋진 날을 나타낼 수도, 현진건의 소설 『운수 좋은 날』(1924)처럼 반어적 표현으로 사용될 수도 있다. 우리는 언제나 멋진 날을 꿈꾸고 계속되기를 바라지만, 현실은 늘 예기치 못한 일의 연속이다. 고현정과 김도연의 작품을 통해 당신의 어느 멋진 날에 관한 이야기를 마주할 수 있는 시간이 되기를 바란다.

How Was Your Day?

From birth to death, every living organism on Earth evolves by confronting unforeseen obstacles and challenges, seeking solutions and growth through the process. Among them, humans are unique beings endowed with intellect — capable of abstract thought, moral judgment, philosophical reflection, and cultural development. In contrast, animals act primarily on instinct and intuition, performing behaviors essential for survival. Their actions — driven by instinct, reflex, and adaptation — reflect an evolutionary response to their environment.

Though animals display emotional responses, cooperation, social interaction, and communication reminiscent of human behavior, they lack the same abstract reasoning that characterizes human intellect. Instead, they possess highly developed senses perfectly attuned to their surroundings and modes of survival.

The exhibition 《One Fine Day》 presents the works of Ko Hyun-jung and Kim Do-yeon, two artists who explore the delicate boundary between life and death — across humans, animals, and plants — through their own distinctive colors and sensibilities.

Ko Hyun-jung captures stories of humans, animals, and plants facing calamities — from small misfortunes to large-scale disasters. Her images reflect the resilience and adaptation found in nature and daily life, expressing the cyclical encounters between joy and hardship. The repeated yet subtly shifting patterns of color, texture, and atmosphere in her paintings reveal that each day, though seemingly the same, holds a different time and emotion within it.

Kim Do-yeon, on the other hand, translates her own experiences and inner world into delicate, experimental drawings. Through the imaginative use of diverse materials and techniques, she creates a unique visual language that merges personal perception with fiction and allegory. Her narrators are often animals — strange, anthropomorphic figures that inhabit an ambiguous space between human and non-human, reality and imagination.

In the works of both Ko and Kim, animals emerge as narrators. Yet the way each artist conceives and represents these animal symbols diverges: while Ko observes her subjects from an external, reflective distance, Kim expresses them as direct extensions of her own lived experience. Ko’s spontaneous chain of images resonates with Kim’s rhythm of “visual breathing,” but their voices remain distinct.

The phrase “One Fine Day” can carry many meanings. Literally, it may suggest a beautiful or perfect day, but — like Hyun-jin Geon’s 1924 short story A Lucky Day — it may also imply irony, revealing life’s unpredictable duality. We all dream of fine days and wish them to last, yet reality often unfolds as a series of unforeseen turns.

Through the works of Ko Hyun-jung and Kim Do-yeon, this exhibition invites viewers to reflect on their own version of One Fine Day — whether it be a day of quiet joy, unexpected trial, or rediscovery of the everyday.
